Lanner Brass Academy

The Lanner Brass Academy was established in January 2010. This group of 6-16 year olds learn to play brass instruments individually and as a group. The skills that are being learnt by the children include the ability to learn a new skill, the ability to work as part of a team with a view to performing for the local community and give joy to those who listen to them. Not only is the group for youngsters some of the tutors are as young as 12 years of age. These children are role models for those that are starting out. The pupils can see that with practice they too can be as good as those teaching them.

The group is not only a forum for learning to play it is also a youth club. Without this community group some of these children may be hanging around on street corners causing disruption to the greater community. There is a real sense of community within the group. All that are there want to be there which these days is a rare.

The money granted would be used towards instruments and music to help the pupils realise their potential and progress to bigger and better things. At the current time some of the instruments used belong to the county music service which need to be returned before the summer holidays. Currently there are not enough instruments to go around, therefore some children will miss out on continuing with a hobby they have found enjoyable.

I believe that music is a wonderful way to get people together and co-operate as well as learning a valuable skill which will give pleasure for life. Music is very therapeutic.

I chose this group as I am a local musician

My daughters both benefitted greatly from the advantages of learning music when they were young. One now has a successful career in music and the other has a lifelong passion and love of music (particularly brass) and plays regularly as a hobby. As a support teacher in a local college and chairman of a local music club I am happy to support other musical groups as I know how hard it is to motivate young and older people sometimes but I know the benefits are great.

Being part of the Band is a good way for youngsters to learn about music within a team spirit.
